The Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE) already expressed its full support to the Polish citizens initiative #StopAbortion ("Zatrzymaj Aborcję") which consists in a legislative proposal aimed to ban eugenic abortion.

In view of a growing international and media pressure, FAFCE reiteirates its support to this citizens' initiative, by reaffirming the principle of subsidiarity and the right to life of all human beings. Every human life matters: a society which truly respects human dignity will welcome all babies, with a particular care to the weakest and the voiceless among us, like those unborn babies affected by diseases or foetal abnormalities. Already last year a "Plan for Life" was already implemented in Poland, granting financial support upon the birth of a child with disability or with a serious disease.

According to the President of FAFCE, Antoine Renard, "Those who define themselves as 'human rights defenders' and experts but ignore the scientific facts about the beginning of human life do not deserve too much consideration by Polish policy-makers: on the contrary, by adopting the #StopAbortion bill, the Members of the Parliament will make of their Country an example for all Europe". On the occasion of the World Down Syndrome Day, celebrated last week in the European Parliament, it was recalled that in the UK, Iceland and Denmark more than 90%  of babies with Down Syndrome are aborted.

A #StopAbortion legislative initiative would be needed not only in Poland, but in many other Countries, also in line with recent comments released by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, stating that "Laws which explicitly allow for abortion on grounds of impairment violate the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".

FAFCE stresses that this draft law has been originated by a citizens' initiative gathering around 830.000 signatures, far beyond the minimum of 100.000 requested for a legislative initiative of this type. Working to make these voices heard at the European level, FAFCE also thinks to all the parents who silently, far from the clamour of media and square demonstrations, care and raise a child with a disease, a richness for all our society: they deserve our respect, support and compassion for all their struggles. They don't need a State which would have prevented their children from being born, but a State respecting life at all stages, in all situations, empowering research to fight diseases and to improve the quality of life.

FAFCE calls on all Polish Political leaders to listen to their numerous fellow citizens and not to be intimidated by all external powers and internal lobbies countering the culture of life. Europe needs an example to follow in the culture of life.
