The Federation of Catholic Family Associations in Europe (FAFCE) and its member in Ireland, Family Solidarity, express their deep concern at the recommendation of the Oireachtas (Irish National Parliament) Special Committee calling for the repeal of the 8th Amendment to the Irish Constitution which recognises “the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother”.
FAFCE points out that an unprecedented attack on the right life is ongoing in Ireland, for merely ideological reasons. All citizens are invited to reflect on the consequences of such a repeal, which attacks the most basic of all human rights: the right to life.
Since the 8th Amendment was introduced in the Constitution, in 1983, Ireland is an international champion in the defence of life, with high standards in public health and with the highest level of maternal health in World Health Organisation classifications. It is estimated that over 100,000 lives of infants have been saved by this amendment alone.
FAFCE expresses all its support of true human rights organisations, pro-life promoters and citizens who are campaigning with courage for the rights of the weakest of our society, the unborn.
Our best wishes this Christmas to all Irish citizens are that in 2018 Ireland continues to guarantee, to defend and to vindicate the right to life, as its Constitution currently guarantees and that in any referendum that they vote overwhelmingly to retain the 8th Amendment.
