Today the European Institutions celebrate what is commonly known as “Europe Day” in Brussels. Two weeks ahead of the European elections, the commemoration of the “Schuman declaration” by one of the founding fathers of the EU provides a reminder of what peace really brought to our European continent: soon 7 decades of peace among the EU Member States. An achievement for which the EU was granted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012.
On 9 May 1950 Robert Schuman said: “Europe will not be made in one go, nor through a comprehensive construction, it will be built by concrete realisations that will first create real solidarity.”
The very first place where solidarity is taught, experienced and learnt is within the family. This is one of the reasons why the family is Europe’s treasure!
This treasure is cherished but sometimes neglected, despite the fact that it is also the future of our continent. Young people across the world aspire for family life: a global survey published in May 2013 shows that what young people desire most is a family and relations that last a life time. What do these young people consider most worthy of respect? Those adults who have been good parents and who kept their family together!
The EU institutions are searching for solutions to the economic, financial and demographic crisis in Europe. The family is a comprehensive solution, provided it is protected and supported by Society!
FAFCE calls on candidates for the European elections to commit themselves to family friendly policies if elected via its campaign Vote for Family 2014.
