The European Commission has launched an online public consultation on the review of the Working Time Directive. A public Consultation is an instrument used by the European Commission to gather insights and contributions from all citizens in the context of a review, an impact assessment process or a new initiative, often concerning a legislative act of the European Union.
In light of the above, it is easy to understand why it is important to take part in such consultations that are capable of influencing the whole legislative process at its earliest phase. This is the case of the Working Time Directive (2003/88/EC) that the European Commission led by Jean-Claude Juncker intends to review during its mandate. Among the rights that this Directive guarantees to all workers within the European Union there are for example a minimum daily rest period of 11 consecutive hours in every 24 hours, the fact that average working hours must not exceed 8 hours per 24-hour period and extra protection for night work.
In the context of this review, intended to update and reform the whole Directive, there is a possibility to promote Sunday as a common rest day for the EU. FAFCE, a member of the European Sunday Alliance, is actively involved in this process and will participate in the consultation.
FAFCE also encourages families and NGOs across the EU to have their say! The consultation will run until 15 March 2015 and everybody can take part in it through this online questionnaire.
